According to its second forecast for the 2020 harvest published on Monday 16 March, the Committee on Cereals Trade (Coceral) estimates that the total cereals harvest in the Twenty-Seven (+ the UK) will amount to 302.5 million tonnes (t), down slightly from the 302.7 million t estimated in the first forecast. Compared to 2019 volumes, this represents a decrease of 1.7%, or 5.2 million t (last year’s total of 307.9 million t).
Wheat production (excluding durum) is estimated at 136.5 million tonnes, down from the previously estimated 137.9 million tonnes and especially from last year’s 145.7 million t. This is due to a further significant acreage reduction in the UK due to heavy rains during the planting season last autumn.
EU barley production for 2020 is expected to reach 61.8 million t, compared to 62.2 million t in 2019.
The EU corn harvest for 2020 is expected to reach 65 million t, up from last year’s 61 million t. It is estimated at 9.0 million hectares, compared to 8.5 million hectares in 2019. The most notable year-on-year production increases are expected in France, Germany and Poland.
The EU rapeseed production forecast for 2020 has been revised slightly downwards from 17.1 million t to 17 million t, as a further downward revision in the UK’s acreage was not compensated by a higher acreage in the areas in France.
