16/03/2020 (Agence Europe) – As public and private organisations are stepping up measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic, the Chair of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) called, on Monday 16 March, for the continued protection of personal data. "Data protection rules (...) do not hinder measures taken in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. However, I would like to underline that, even in these exceptional times, the data controller must ensure the protection of the personal data of the data subjects", she said. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provides rules adapted to pandemics, she assured. In particular, it allows employers and public health authorities to process personal data, without the need to obtain the consent of the data subject, for public health reasons.
