The European Parliament gave the go-ahead on Thursday 10 October by a very large majority (583 votes in favour, 18 against and 51 abstentions) for a cooperation agreement between the European Judicial Cooperation Agency, Eurojust, and Denmark.
The favourable opinion, drawn up by Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D, Spain), on the draft EU Council implementing decision on this cooperation agreement was adopted without modification, in contrast to the vote in the parliamentary committee.
The objective of this agreement is to promote cooperation in the fight against serious crime, in particular organised crime and terrorism. It provides, inter alia, for liaison officers, contact points and the exchange of information.
The cooperation agreement between Eurojust and Serbia follows the model of similar agreements previously concluded by Eurojust with Switzerland, Norway, Albania or, more recently, Georgia. It is also in line with the European Commission's strategy for the Western Balkans in 2018.
Serbia is the country that receives the most requests for judicial cooperation in the region and, in general, the second most requested non-Member State in the handling of Eurojust cases. The country was involved in 34 cases in 2018. (Original version in French by Marion Fontana)
