EU calls for quick formation of a government

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and the Commissioner for Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, called on Tuesday 8 October for the swift formation of a government 2 days after the opposition won the parliamentary elections in Kosovo (see EUROPE 12327/25).

The Vetevendosje party obtained 25.9% of the votes, neck and neck with the LDK (25.33%). The main parties of the ruling coalition, the PDK and AAK, won 21.37% and 11.7% of the votes respectively.

The European Union looks forward to the formation of a new government as soon as the relevant procedures are completed”, Ms Mogherini and Mr Hahn stressed in a statement. In their view, this is important if Kosovo is to be able to “swiftly resume work on reforms in support of economic and social development as well as rule of law, on the implementation of the EU-Kosovo Stabilisation and Association Agreement and on the EU-facilitated Dialogue with Belgrade”. All political actors must remain committed to these processes, they added.

According to Ms Mogherini and Mr Hahn, the elections were “peaceful and orderly”, “well-administered and transparent”. “The campaign environment was vibrant and competitive in most of Kosovo, but marred by intimidation in the Kosovo Serb areas. All the irregularities identified should be addressed by the authorities”, they stressed. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
