European judges sound alarm on independence of judiciary in EU

20/09/2019 (Agence Europe)On Friday 20 September, the presidents of the Network of Presidents of the Supreme Courts of the EU, the European Association of Judges and the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary sent a letter to President-elect Ursula von der Leyen expressing their deep concern about the state of independence of the judiciary in the EU. “Our common legal order is at risk, considering that several Member States are systematically undermining the core values on which the Union is based. In particular, the independence of the judiciary is being severely threatened, and the separation of powers between the executive branch and the judicial branch is being dismantled”, they write. The three presidents requested an urgent meeting with Mrs von der Leyen to ensure that she makes the independence of the judiciary and respect for the rule of law one of her priorities.
