28/08/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will hear, on Wednesday morning, 4 September, from Christine Lagarde, the Frenchwoman appointed by the European Council to chair the European Central Bank (ECB) (see EUROPE 12287/1). It will formulate its advisory opinion following this hearing. Mrs Lagarde is expected to take office on 12 September, the day on which the ECB Governing Council will discuss new accommodative monetary policy measures to tackle persistent low inflation (see EUROPE 12304/1). In parallel, the Europeans will try to place Bulgarian Kristalina Georgieva at the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to replace Mrs Lagarde (see EUROPE 12310/22). To this end, the IMF's Articles of Agreement setting the age limit at 65 years will have to be amended, as recently recommended by the financial organisation's executive board. (MB)
