31/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – The spokesperson of the European External Action Service called once again on Tuesday 30 July, on Belarus - the only European country that still carries out executions - to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty and to commute the remaining sentences. According to the spokesperson, this would be a "positive first step towards its abolition". "Tangible steps taken by Belarus to respect universal human rights, including the death penalty, remain key for shaping the EU's future policy towards Belarus", the spokesperson warned in a statement. On the same day, the Vitebsk Regional Court reportedly sentenced Viktar Paulau to death after finding him guilty of double murder. He is the second person sentenced to death in the country this year.
