12/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – In an Executive Order issued on 11 June, Washington wants to encourage access to new biotechnologies for its producers - and facilitate access to foreign markets for agricultural products produced using such biotechnologies - including GMOs. They “face unjustified trade barriers”, the document states; President Trump has therefore mandated the Office of the Trade Representative (‘USTR’) to put in place an international trade strategy to remove these barriers and access foreign markets. Washington is considering all means to try to open the European market to these genetically modified products: in January 2019, the USTR published trade negotiation objectives inviting Europeans to establish “specific commitments for trade in products developed through agricultural biotechnology”, a subject that was banned from the outset by the European Commission (see EUROPE 12171/10).
