03/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission will mobilise €100 million in humanitarian aid for the survivors of cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which hit Mozambique in March and April, the European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, announced on Saturday 1 June at the Beira donor conference. Cyclone Idai, which killed nearly 1,000 people, is one of the worst weather disasters in the history of southern Africa. To address its consequences, the EU has already mobilised €17 million in humanitarian aid for Mozambique, €14.5 million for Zimbabwe and more than €2 million for Malawi (see EUROPE 12232/22). Nine Member States (Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom) have provided specific assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. (MB)
