Hungarian government puts a stop to a contested reform of administrative courts

03/06/2019 (Agence Europe)On Friday 31 May, the Hungarian government announced an indefinite break in the implementation of a particularly criticised judicial reform, namely the establishment of a new system of administrative courts capable of settling sensitive disputes such as those relating to public procurement, courts that would have been placed under the more direct authority of the Minister of Justice, with an increased role in the appointment of judges. The government spokesman announced an "indefinite" suspension of this new law. On the other hand, the government's actions continue in the world of education with the continuation of the reform of certain institutions, such as the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a reform on which thousands of Hungarians demonstrated on 2 June, denouncing a new attack on academic freedom and seeing it as an attempt at government control.
