Annulment of a Commission decision ordering Spain to recover €18.4 million from Real Madrid

On Wednesday 22 May, the General Court annulled the European Commission's decision of July 2016 requesting the Spanish State to recover €18.4 million from the Real Madrid football club, an amount considered by the latter to be illegal State aid (see EUROPE B11586A6).

According to the Commission, the football club had received an overestimated compensation, estimated at €22.7 million, in the context of a transfer of ownership of land between the club and the city of Madrid, whereas...
