Labour Party to decide whether to include second referendum in its manifesto for European elections

Jeremy Corbyn's British Labour Party was due to decide on Tuesday 30 April whether to include the possibility of holding a second referendum on the UK's exit from the EU in the Labour manifesto for the European elections, several British media outlets reported.

Under pressure from some MPs and activists to hold this second consultation, Jeremy Corbyn's party was scheduled to meet during the day in order to debate whether a second referendum or a popular vote should be held to confirm an exit agreement with the EU.

Along with Nigel Farage's ‘Brexit party’, Jeremy Corbyn's Labour is the second grouping who are likely, according to recent surveys, to send the most MEPs to the European Parliament in the event that the United Kingdom has not validated the draft EU exit agreement by 23 May.

According to The Guardian, more than 100 Labour MPs voted in favour of the possibility of a second referendum in all instances, but according to the newspaper, it seems possible that Labour will move towards a compromise that would only mean holding such a referendum in the event of a bad agreement being offered by Mrs May.

As for her part, the British leader is continuing her exchanges with Jeremy Corbyn's Labour, which were described as "constructive" on Monday 29 April by members of the Labour Party.

Also on Monday 29 April in Leuven, the EU negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, was happy to simply stress that the EU hoped to "see the results of the inter-party talks this week” and that the ball remained "in the British court". (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
