11/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 8 February, the GUE/NGL Group in the European Parliament announced that nominations for its annual prize for journalists, whistleblowers and defenders of the right to information, are officially open until 1 March. This award, created in 2018, honours individuals or groups who have been intimidated or persecuted for revealing essential information to the public. In addition to the prize, the winner will receive €5,000, a sum intended to support and disseminate their investigative work in an effort to safeguard and promote freedom of the press and the right to information. Last year, the prize was awarded jointly to Ján Kuciak, a Slovak journalist murdered in February 2018, and Raphaël Halet, one of the whistleblowers in the LuxLeaks case. The award ceremony will take place on 16 April at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. (DG - intern)
