On Wednesday 30 January, Member States' ambassadors to the EU endorsed a proposal updating Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency and Regulation 2018/1999 on the governance of the energy union, to take into account the future withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU.
Due to Brexit, it is necessary to technically adjust the projected EU energy consumption figures for 2030 to reflect the Union of 27.
Projections corresponding to the headline target of at least 32.5%energy efficiency for the Union indicate that primary energy consumption should be 1,273 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) and that final energy consumption should be 956 Mtoe in 2030 for the EU28. Equivalent projections for the EU27, excluding the United Kingdom, indicate that primary energy consumption should be 1,128 Mtoe and final energy consumption should be 846 Mtoe in 2030. The figures for primary and final energy consumption should therefore be adjusted.
According to the new Governance Regulation, Member States need to consider the Union's energy consumption in 2030 when setting their energy efficiency contribution towards the Union's headline targets for 2030. The Regulation must be amended accordingly.
Both the European Parliament and the Council are expected to adopt the texts before the end of March. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
