EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Montenegro

Parliament welcomes country's progress in accession process

MEPs welcomed Montenegro's continued progress in its EU accession process on Thursday 29 November.

However, the report by Charles Tannock (ECR, United Kingdom), adopted in plenary session (484 votes in favour, 80 against and 63 abstentions), calls on the country to continue its efforts, in particular in addressing problems related to the rule of law, media freedom, corruption, money laundering, organised crime and associated violence.

According to the European Parliament, the country must also work on budgetary transparency and the creation of an environment conducive to business and employment.

While Montenegro has faced a boycott of Parliament, MEPs remind all political parties that "constructive political engagement is based on a fully functional parliament". They also call for the shortcomings identified during the last elections to be addressed.

MEPs also highlight Montenegro's efforts towards constructive regional cooperation and good bilateral neighbourly relations, while calling on it to find early solutions to remaining border disputes. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
