11/10/2018 (Agence Europe) – Under the Schengen Borders Code (Article 25), the Austrian authorities notified the European Commission on Thursday 11 October of their plan to extend for six months, until 12 May 2019, border controls between their country and Hungary and Slovenia, two borders within the Schengen Area of free movement of people. Reintroduced periodically, notably to combat secondary movements of migrants within the EU, these measures expire on Sunday 11 November. Six countries (Germany, Austria, France, Denmark, Norway and Sweden) have now introduced this type of control. The Commission, which has presented a reform aiming to restore fluidity in the area of free movement (see EUROPE 11871), encourages the member states to introduce instead police controls in border regions. But so far it has never issued an adverse opinion to the justifications put forward by member states to restore border controls. (MB)
