08/10/2018 (Agence Europe) – European Commissioner for Justice Věra Jourová and European Commission First Vice-President with responsibility for the rule of law Frans Timmermans said on Sunday 7 October that they were "shocked" at the assassination on 6 October of Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova from Bulgarian TV channel TVN, who had broadcast an investigation by journalists into fraud and embezzlement of European funds. The two EU politicians said those responsible for the murder should be brought before the justice system without delay. Jourová even offered assistance from EU agencies, if required. In the global classification of freedom of the press, Bulgaria comes 111th out of 180 countries, the worst European Union score, says organisation Reporters Sans Frontières. Marinova is the third journalist murdered in the EU, following Maltese reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017 and Slovakian Ján Kuciak in February 2018. (MB)
