23/07/2018 (Agence Europe) – Jo Leinen (S&D, Germany), who led a delegation of five MEPs to Tunisia on 16-18 July, has called for the country's decentralisation to be continued. "The municipal elections were an important step in the democratic consolidation process. Now they need to be followed up with concrete steps to complete the decentralisation process, notably in terms of human and financial resources to enable the optimal development of Tunisian local authorities and civil society", he said in a press release on Friday 20 July. During the delegation's meetings with Tunisian leaders and civil society, Leinen underlined "the importance of continuing the reforms to complete the democratic transition, particularly in the economic and social domains". They also discussed migration and cooperation on counter-terrorism. (CG)
