Infringement procedure against Poland over water pollution by nitrates closed

20/07/2018 (Agence Europe)Infringement proceedings against Poland for water pollution by agricultural nitrates have been closed, the European Commission announced on Thursday 19 July. After the European Court of Justice ruling against it in November 2014, Poland has taken the necessary steps to comply with the requirements of Directive 91/676/EEC, which seeks to reduce pollution of groundwater and surface water caused by nitrates from agricultural sources. The Court of Justice ruled that Poland had insufficiently designated vulnerable zones and had not included adequate measures in the action programmes to prevent pollution of this sort. In July 2017, Poland passed a new Water Act which extended the application of the action programme to the whole country. Poland has also identified the appropriate measures in a new action programme rectifying the problems found.  (AN)
