17/07/2018 (Agence Europe) – In 2017 the European Commission opened 716 infringement procedures, a 16% decrease on the number opened in 2016 (see EUROPE 11824) when the Commission launched 986 new procedures, according to the most recent Commission annual report and factsheets on monitoring the application of EU law, published on Thursday 12 July. At the end of 2017, the Commission had launched 1,559 procedures altogether. Spain (93 ongoing infringement procedures), followed by Portugal (85) and Belgium (81) are the member states with there highest number of ongoing infringements. Denmark (28), Estonia (33) and Malta (33) are the three member states with the lowest number of infringement procedures being opened against them. The majority of infringement procedures opened in 2017 focused on mobility and transport, the environment, financial stability, services and capital markets.
