Juncker will see his mandate out, European institution spokesperson pledges

16/07/2018 (Agence Europe)Videos of the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, staggering and being supported by his colleagues at the NATO summit, which have gone viral on social media, deeply displeased leading members of the Austrian far-right party FPÖ, a member of the government coalition. Its leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, approved of comments by the Secretary General of the party, Harald Vilimsky, calling for Juncker, whom he accuses of alcoholism, to step down. “We'll carry our programme to the end”, stressed Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas on Monday 16 July, reporting “productive” discussions during the visit of the College to the Austrian Presidency of the Council in Vienna at the beginning of July (see EUROPE 12057). On Friday, he explained that Juncker was taking sedatives for a painful bout of sciatica. On Monday, Juncker was in Beijing for the EU/China summit (see other articles). (MB)
