In a ruling delivered on Wednesday 4 July (case C-626/16) (see EUROPE 11574), the European Court of Justice imposed penalties on Slovakia for its delay in complying with a previous ruling dating from 2013 (case C-331/11), taking the view that operation of the Žilina – Považský Chlmec landfill site infringed the directive (1999/31) on the landfill of waste.
Slovakia was fined a lump sum of €1 million and a penalty payment of €5,000 per day of delay.
