20/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 20 April, the European Commission approved a Swedish measure aiming to encourage the transfer from road haulage to rail freight. The measure, with an envelope of around €56 million for the years 2018 and 2019, will take the form of a subsidy awarded to rail freight companies, with the aim being for this support to be handed on to consumers, thereby encouraging them to opt for rail freight rather than road. Considering that the measure would help to achieve the environmental and mobility objectives of the European Union, but without creating a competition distortion on the single market, the Commission concluded that it was compatible with EU state aid rules.
