19/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 19 April, the European Commission found that a Danish measure to reduce waste water charges that was granted to certain large users of water did not constitute state aid. The Commission's assessment was conducted after representatives of the meat industry complained that this tariff system confers an advantage to some companies to the detriment others. The Commission found that the system enabled customers of public waste water treatment plants to be kept and thus to contribute to the profitability of these plants. In particular, the system allows public waste water treatment plants to attract the larger users capable of treating their own waste water and who, without the higher discounts, would consider leaving the municipal waste water system. Furthermore, the Commission noted that the charges paid by these larger users still cover the costs incurred by the waste water treatment plants for the service. (LT)
