Busy week for European Parliament on copyright

15/03/2018 (Agence Europe)The obligation incumbent on the platforms that store and provide access to a large amount of copyright protected content to take “technical” measures to prevent the availability of the said content, has reappeared in the Parliament's compromise amendments on copyright reform (see EUROPE 11975).  This has provoked the ire of Julia Reda MEP (Greens/EFA, Germany) for whom these technical measures are equivalent to “censorship machines” and who believes the compromise amendments were drafted by the Commission.  At the end of the shadow rapporteurs' meeting on 15 March in Strasbourg, she tweeted: Axel Voss said that the inclusion of ‘technical measures’ was a mistake but insisted on the fact that all platforms, in the broadest sense, communicate to the public and are responsible for violations committed by their users”.  This information has as yet not been confirmed to us.  (SPj)
