On Wednesday 28 February, the national ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) appointed nine judges and three advocates general to the Court of Justice of the European Union for a term of six years, to run from 7 October 2018.

These appointments come in the framework of the partial renewal of the composition of the Court of Justice, which occurs once every three years.

Eight individuals have seen their mandates as judges renewed: Alexander Arabadjiev (Bulgaria), Jean-Claude Bonichot (France), Thomas von Danwitz (Germany), Carl Gustav Fernlund (Sweden), Egils Levits (Latvia), Constantinos Lycourgos (Cyprus), Jiri Malenovsky (Czech Republic) and Alexandra (Sacha) Prechal (Netherlands). Lucia Serena Rossi (Italy) has been appointed judge for the first time.

Yves Bot (France), Giovanni Pitruzzella (Italy) and Maciej Szpunar (Poland) were appointed advocates general. For both Bot and Szpunar, this was a mandate renewal.

In all, the mandates of fourteen judges and five advocates general will expire on 6 October 2018. Five more judges and a further two advocates general have still to be appointed in 2018. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
