01/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 1 February, the European Parliament’s Turkey Forum, consisting of 60 MEPs from different political groups, condemned the continued detention of Taner Kılıç, chair of Amnesty International in Turkey (see EUROPE 11804). An Istanbul court ordered his conditional release on 31 January, after eight months in pre-trial detention. The following day, however, the same court overturned its own release verdict, keeping him in pre-trial detention. “The re-arrest of Amnesty International’s Turkey chair Taner Kılıç is a travesty of justice”, the MEPs say in a press release. “We deeply regret this situation and call for an immediate review of the decision. We are witnessing unusual legal manoeuvres which are a reflection of the current dire state of the Turkish judicial system, as well as the erosion of rule of law and the separation of powers”, they continue. Kılıç and ten human rights activists have been accused of belonging to a terrorist organisation. (CG)
