19/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – In a press release on Friday 19 January, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) welcomed the appointment of the members of the Task Force on Subsidiarity and Proportionality (see EUROPE 11942). It made the point, however, that “the reflection on subsidiarity cannot, however, endorse Europe’s disengagement in the field of regional development, as envisaged in Scenario 4 of the Commission’s White Paper on the Future of Europe”. For the CoR, “subsidiarity should be seen as a means of designing a Europe that works better and which pursues a commitment to Europe shared by all levels of governance, as stressed by the Rome Declaration in March 2017”. CoR administrator Matthieu Hornung tweeted that he was curious to know who the Commission was going to “square (the) circle of more subsidiarity with less EU regional policy”. (PH)
