21/12/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 21 December, the European Commission approved the registration of the first cross-border protected designation of origin (PDO) for a wine, the Maasvallei Limburg, from Belgium and the Netherlands. Wines of this designation can be white, red or rosé and are produced from grape varieties grown on the two banks of the River Meuse in the Belgian and Dutch regions of Limbourg. Other cross-border protected denominations for food products and spirits, such as the Rosée des Pyrénées Catalanes (France and Spain) or the Jonge jenever/Jonge genever (also from Belgium and the Netherlands) already exist but this is the first wine. This designation will now join the list of around 1,750 designations that have already been registered for this sector.
