Mogherini suggests setting up a new peace fund

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini announced on Wednesday 13 December that she will be proposing the establishment of a new European peace fund.

‘"With the Commission we are working on the next multiannual financial framework – our spending plans for the next seven years in the Union. In that context I would propose to create a new European Peace Facility, financed and managed together with our Member States," she explained at an event in Brussels ‘Building on vision, forward to action: delivering on EU security and defence,’ with former High Representative Javier Solana.

Mogherini said the fund "would allow us to be much more efficient in planning and deploying our military missions, but also to support our partners in dealing with our shared security challenges." She said Europe needed to give itself the means and resources needed to ensure respect for its new common ambition on security and defence.

The High Representative also wants to suggest the creation of "mechanism for closer and more constant coordination with the non-European Union countries and international organisations involved in our missions and operations, or otherwise associated to our policy in the field of security and defence. And this mechanism could become even more relevant to guarantee a strong and effective cooperation with the United Kingdom when it leaves the Union."

Mogherini wants the EU to build the security and defence Union but above all she wishes to boost the partnership with NATO, the United Nations and the African Union.  (Original version in French Camille-Cerise Gessant)
