London and EU come close to agreement on first phase of negotiations, but call for more time

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, announced on Monday 4 December that despite all their efforts, they had been unable to agree on all details of the first phase of the British withdrawal from the European Union. Negotiations will resume in the course of the week to conclude this first phase and allow the European summit of mid-December to start discussions on future bilateral relations, on trade in particular.
