04/12/2017 (Agence Europe) – Giving assurances that he will do all in his power to ensure that the facts of the murder of journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia are established, Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat announced on Monday 4 December that the Maltese police had arrested eight people suspected of involvement. Last week, a delegation of MEPs met a number of Maltese politicians, including Muscat, officials and activists during their fact-finding mission on the rule of law in Malta. The MEPs have serious concerns at the unclear separation of powers, giving cause for concern about independence of the judiciary from political interference, according to a European Parliament press release. They have similar concerns regarding politicians exposed in the Malta and Panama Papers revelations on financial dealings (see EUROPE 11762 and 11702). (MB)
