Ongoing discussion on monitoring coastguard

11/09/2017 (Agence Europe)On Monday 11 September, a spokesperson for the European External Action Service, Catherine Ray, told EUROPE that the EU had started working with the Libyan coastguard for Europeans to monitor its work so that a response could be made to the allegations of the Libyan coastguard not respecting human rights.  "In July, the Council added the task of monitoring the EU-trained coastguard.  Work was started with the coastguard to discuss the modalities and the latest details still need to be clarified", she said, adding that she hoped to be able to give more information in the "coming days and weeks".  The monitoring could take place by air.  In June, the Council welcomed the European Council's decision to establish a monitoring mechanism to assess the effectiveness of the coastguard's training (see EUROPE 11831).  (CG)
