On Thursday 31 August, the First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, appeared before the MEPs of the committee on civil liberties of the European Parliament, where he defended the European institution's action concerning the rule of law situation in Poland and stressed that the negative observations it has made so far still stand (see EUROPE 11850).
