Green light to creation of €24 billion fund for management of radioactive waste in Germany

On Friday 16 June, the European Commission authorised the transfer of radioactive waste liabilities to a new German public fund, in return for the payment of around €24.1 billion by operators of nuclear power stations in Germany.

In line with its decision to phase out the production of nuclear electricity by 2022, the Bundestag in December 2016 adopted a law that would see liabilities from the management of radioactive waste transferred from power station operators to the German state....
