EU hails resolution extending mandate of UN mission on Western Sahara

The European Union "hails the adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2351 on the issue of the Sahara", an EU spokesperson said, as reported by Moroccan news agency MAP on Saturday 29 April.

In this resolution, the Security Council has decided to renew, until 30 April 2018, the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The EU calls in this declaration for the parties to be encouraged to use the window of opportunity created by this decision, as well as by the withdrawal of military forces from the Guerguerat area, to work for sustainable peace.

The resolution seems to be satisfactory to both parties. The Sahrawi news agency (SPSRASD) reports that according the Sahrawi coordinator responsible for links with MINURSO, M'hamed Khedad, this resolution – which calls for commitment to the negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front without preconditions – is "a great victory" for the Sahrawi cause, and puts the political process that guarantees the Sahrawi people the right to self-determination back on track.  (Original version in French by Fathi B'chir)
