On Thursday 30 April, the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, announced that he was to meet the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, in London on Thursday 20 April.
During his meeting with May, Tajani will outline the Parliament's position on the forthcoming negotiations on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union in spring 2019. In early April, the European institution drew its lines in the sand, in particular stressing the importance of reaching a satisfactory solution for the 3.3 million European citizens residing in the UK and the million British citizens residing in the EU (see EUROPE 11762, 11761).
“These students, workers and families, some of whom have spent their entire lives in another EU country, deserve absolute certainty over their future”, Tajani said in a press release. He reiterated that Parliament will have a decisive role in approving the agreement on the UK's withdrawal from the Union.
On Saturday 29 April, there will be a meeting of 27 European leaders to approve the guidelines to steer the position of the Twenty-Seven in the negotiations with the British government. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
