Parliament approves regulation on characteristics of fishing vessels

The European Parliament, sitting in Strasbourg on Tuesday 4 April, approved the compromise text agreed by the EU institutions on the recast of the regulation on the characteristics for fishing vessels (length, tonnage, date of entry into service, engine power).

Negotiators reached agreement on the text in February of this year (see EUROPE 11713).

The International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) has established norms for internal combustion engines. The text empowers the Commission to adopt delegated acts in order to adapt the reference to the relevant ISO international standard on engine power to technical progress. Throughout its preparatory work, the Commission will have to conduct the relevant consultations, including at expert level.

European Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella welcomed the agreement reached between the two co-legislators on the proposal on the recast of the regulation on characteristics for fishing vessels. “This is essentially a technical exercise” consisting of codifying a legal text dating back to 1986 and updating an empowerment to the Commission in accordance with the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty, the Commissioner said.
