23/03/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 23 March, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini welcomed the resumption of talks between the Syrian parties in Geneva earlier in the day. She said that returning to talks “represents an essential step on the road to finding a political solution to the conflict in Syria”. UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura will facilitate discussions on tackling terrorism, “governance” (that is to say, political transition), a new constitution and holding elections. “That conflict is entering its seventh year – a demonstration in itself that there can be no lasting military solution to it”, Mogherini stated in a press release, calling for the ceasefire agreement signed in Astana to be fully implemented.
