21/03/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 21 March, the European Commission announced that the European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, will be travelling to Budapest on 28 March. On 8 March (see EUROPE 11741) it was agreed that the Commissioner would travel to Hungary to have a “serious discussion” with the authorities regarding their decisions to systematically detain all migrants seeking asylum within their border zones. The Hungarian law adopted on 7 March will apply to all recent arrivals, as well as asylum seekers already in the country. The law stipulates that migrants will be placed in “transit zones” between the Serbian and Croatian borders, where they will be detained whilst awaiting a final decision on their respective dossiers.
