EUROPEAN COUNCIL / Ep2019

Terms for appointments to senior European positions will be reviewed in 2017

10/03/2017 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 9 March, European leaders decided to return, later in the year, to the process, criteria and balances required for appointments to senior positions ahead of next institutional cycle.

This request, which emanated principally from the Social Democrat family, is due to the fact that the Christian Democrat family now holds the Presidencies of the European Commission, in the person of Luxembourg's Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Parliament, with Italy's Antonio Tajani, and the European Council, with Poland's Donald Tusk, even though its representation at the European Council is no longer as dominant as it has been in the past.

The current system is not sustainable and is not in the interests of institutional harmony, said the Maltese Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat. (Mathieu Bion)
