Paul Magnette sees CETA saga as warning signal for Europe

07/03/2017 (Agence Europe)In a book entitled "CETA: quand l'Europe déraille" (CETA: when Europe derails) published on Tuesday 7 March, the Minister-President of the Region of Wallonia, Paul Magnette, gives his viewpoint of the saga of Autumn 2016 surrounding the signature by the EU of the free-trade agreement with Canada, lifting a corner of the veil on what went on behind the scenes in the negotiations with the Canadian government and EU leaders. Magnette intends to bring to life the debate on the stakes of globalisation, stressing that the citizens' opposition to the CETA in Wallonia and elsewhere was not a moment of bravery, but a signal that started to shake up certainties regarding issues related to international trade and the functioning of the EU. Magnette, a convinced European who takes care not to hand new arguments to the Eurosceptics, expresses regret regarding his isolation among the European Social Democrats, some of whom approved of CETA, lamenting a fairly widespread liberal tendency in the European Socialist family.  (EH)
