26/01/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 26 January, the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) published a raft of recommendations for European political decision-makers to fight the death rates of young people on the roads. In particular, the organisation proposes: - to tighten the legislation on drink-driving, speed limits, wearing seat belts and using mobile telephones whilst driving; - encouragement of accompanied driving; - the creation of a progressive driving licence system for young people (driving by day and without passengers initially); - increasing awareness-raising initiatives targeting young people: - incentives for young people to acquire safer vehicles. In December of last year, the Commission presented a raft of measures to reinforce vehicle safety, but several of these measures were deemed unsatisfactory by the ETSC (see EUROPE 11696). (PH)
