19/01/2017 (Agence Europe) – To tackle the escalating humanitarian crisis in the countries of the Lake Chad region, which has been destabilised by the terrorist group Boko Haram, €40 million in emergency aid has been made available, the European Commission announced on Thursday 19 January. These resources will cover the needs of the most vulnerable populations, particularly refugees and their host communities, and displaced persons. Nigeria, which is hosting the largest number of refugees, will receive €22 million, Cameroon €7 million, Niger €6 million and Chad €5 million. "The humanitarian situation in this fragile region is reaching extremely worrying proportions", the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, stated in a press release, stressing that the insecurity is making access difficult for humanitarian organisations.
