On Thursday 12 January, the Maltese ministers for home affairs and justice, Carmelo Abela and Owen Bonnici respectively, promised the MEPs of the committee on civil liberties of the European Parliament that they would do all in their power to move forward the negotiations on the reform of the asylum system and the Dublin regulation as well as work to set in place a European prosecutor's office to fight European budgetary fraud, possibly by means of enhanced cooperation.
