A new platform for collaboration on national transition plans towards sustainable, climate resilient development was launched at COP 22 in Marrakesh on Thursday 17 November.
The “2050 pathways platform” was launched by French Ambassadress for Climate Change Laurence Tubiana, ministers and non-governmental players from countries of both the North and the South working on long-term efforts to combat climate change and to achieve the sustainable development goals.
The role of the platform will be to allow the sharing of knowledge and good practice and to provide financial and technical support to countries seeking to develop strategies to decarbonise their economies by 2050 – strategies that will be decisive for the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The members of the platform are the European Commission, which, in March 2011, presented the EU roadmap for a low carbon economy by 2050 (see EUROPE 10330) and 21 countries which have begun or are about to begin preparing this transition process (Brazil, Germany, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, France, Italy, Japan, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, New Zealand, Morocco, Peru, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States). In addition, 15 cities, 17 states and 196 companies have also joined the platform which is open to all who are committed to the initiative. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
