18/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 17 November, the European Commission launched an inception impact assessment on the revision of the Eurovignette directive (Directive 1999/62/EC) for heavy duty vehicles. The objective of the inception impact assessment is to inform sector actors about the Commission’s current work, so that they can reflect on the initiative envisaged by the Commission. The revision aims to: - make better use of road tolls to reduce CO2 emissions and tackle the problem of traffic jams; - guarantee fair treatment between regular and occasional road infrastructure users; - guarantee appropriate road quality in exchange for road tolls. Germany was recently in the Commission’s sights due to its road toll plans which contained provisions deemed discriminatory by the Commission (see EUROPE 11662). (PH)
