24/10/2016 (Agence Europe) – No sooner had an agreement with the International Civil Aviation Organisation been obtained on a global market measure to tackle CO2 emissions from the sector, than the EU Commissioner for Transport Violetta Bulc has begun working towards obtaining an agreement at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for a monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for international maritime transport. On Monday 24 October, the commissioner was in London to take part in the opening of the IMO marine environment protection committee. Between now and 28 October, this committee is due to adopt a global MRV system for CO2 emissions from ships. The EU already has such a system in place as a step towards the future reduction of maritime sector emissions. The regulation that introduced the system entered into force in July 2015 2015 and will be operational by 2018 (see EUROPE 11305). (AN)
