Member states must ensure minimum compensation for victims of any type of violent crime

All member states are required to guarantee a minimal level of compensation for victims of any type of violent crime, including those committed in another EU country, stated the European Court of Justice in a case in which it ruled against Italy on Tuesday 11 October.

In its ruling in Case C-601/14, the court agreed with the European Commission, which had issued an appeal against Italy for bad transposition of the EU directive on compensating the victims of crime (2004/80/EC).  The...
