26/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 23 September, the EU hailed the orderly conduct of the elections held in Jordan on 20 September. With these elections, a spokesperson for the European External Action Service said in a press release, “Jordan has sent a strong and positive signal to the world, that holding well-organised, inclusive and peaceful elections in a troubled region is possible”. “A new parliament has now been elected and its members play an important role in further advancing the democratic process in their country”, she added. The spokesperson said that the recommendations of the EU electoral observation mission would guide the EU in its cooperation with Jordan's electoral authorities and in support of the democratically elected parliament, and in the further development of the political party system. The elections saw the return to parliament of the Muslim Brotherhood, after it had boycotted elections for a period of 12 years. (CG)
